Engage in meaningful discussions about Scotland’s future. Discover, debate and define an independent path.
Engage with others in our movement. We promote unity by encouraging people to work together.
The independence movement includes many groups doing excellent work, but which are often unaware of work being carried out by others. This can lead to overlapping effort, uncertainty and, in the worst cases, conflict.
IFS seeks to help to bring together every organisation and group which aspires to independence. Our aim is to encourage collaboration, to minimise duplication, to celebrate successes and – above all – to put a focus on positive action for meaningful change.
IFS is predominantly an online group, with few fixed costs.
The small amount of funding required to date has been obtained by application to the Scottish Independence Foundation (SIF) which, like ourselves, is party politically neutral. We have never sought funding from political parties and we never will.

Membership is open to any corporate or unincorporated body which has a clear majority of independence supporting members. There are two categories of membership:
Members: National bodies or groups, regional bodies or networks.
Associates: National bodies or groups with some affiliation to political parties, or bodies or groups which choose not to become full members.
Our members and interested guests attend regular meetings of the ‘Forum’ to share information and look for opportunities to work together.
We organise National Conventions, aimed at inspiring the nation towards self-determination.
We meet informally with our members and others to seek consensus on bringing the movement together and hastening the march to independence.
Engage with experts and enthusiasts in comprehensive talks on Scottish independence.
Develop Scotland’s future institutions and governing structures. Explore extending Scotland’s democracy.
A series of papers will be produced, to inform a prospectus for an independent Scotland. The current prospectus papers list can be read here.
